Thermo-Auricular Therapy, or Ear Candling, is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilizations. It was seen in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, but it is the native American Hopi Indian tribe that had the most recent influence on the therapy in modern Europe and from which the phrase, “Hopi Ear Candling” is derived. Good ear candles are still hand made today on the basis of the old traditional methods originating from the Hopi Indians, using the finest organic ingredients.
Ear candles are used widely throughout Europe, America and Asia to treat a wide variety of ear, nose and throat conditions such as excessive ear wax, sinusitis, rhinitis, headaches, migraine, tinnitus, Menieres disease, vertigo, dizziness and hay fever etc. As an ear candle treatment is a non-invasive, relaxing and soothing experience, its popularity continues to increase.
Ear candles are hollow, have no wick and are usuallly made from cotton, cotton-flax or hemp fibres. The fibres are sprayed with pure beeswax to stiffen them, combined with honey extract and traditional herbs such as Sage, St John’s Wort, Camomile and pure essential oils.
A thermo-auricular treatment begins with a short consultation so that the therapist can answer any concerns, determine the client’s problems and sort out the best way to carry out the treatment. The therapist will also examine the client’s ears using an otoscope to ensure that the ears are suitable for the treatment. If an infection is present or if the ear drum is perforated for example, it may be unwise to carry out the treatment.
During the treatment the client lies on their side with the lighted candle placed just inside the entrance to the ear canal. A pleasant crackling sound will be heard, very gentle heat will be experienced around the ear and a ‘popping’ sensation may be experienced. The candle is allowed to burn down to about 1 cm above a specific marker on the side of the candle, and the treatment is then repeated for the other ear. Sometimes clients find it so relaxing that they fall asleep.
Following the treatment a facial massage is given, after which the client is left alone to relax for about 10 minutes.
Very occasionally it may be unwise to carry out the treatment or it may be necessary to request written permission from the client’s doctor before a treatment can be given. If you have any concerns, please do check with Christine and/or your GP before requesting a treatment. All treatments with Christine are treated as highly confidential and no information will be passed to others without your permission.
